When We're Lost in 'What Ifs'

Book and Bench

This Week's Pondering:

Q: What topic do you find yourself ruminating on most?

A: What if.

I often find myself perseverating about past happy events and wondering, what if I hadn't left that job/relationship, or sold that car/house, or dropped out of school, etc.? How much better off would I be had I not made that choice?

Something occurred to me recently. What if I changed my what if to WHAT NOW? or even WHAT NEXT? Wow, what a perspective shift that granted me!

It's okay to get lost in nostalgia for a minute, but it's not where I want to live presently. I'll give myself a minute to think back to those happy moments, but I always end those thoughtful sessions by pondering what I'm working on now or next. Even with relationships - I can look at them and notice that while I may be missing how things used to be, I can see how honest my current relationships are now. Sometimes the dynamic just needed to shift with those I'm close with; sometimes we simply needed to release one another. But when I'm present and honest, the What Now feels truthful to my soul. And I think that's the whole point of living in integrity.

Your turn: What topic do you find yourself ruminating on most?
